'Solar-powered' Indian invited to NASA for 'food' research : HindustanTimes.com
If this is a real breakthrough(!?), this could solve the hunger problems of not only India but the world.

Have been watching Wimbledon all day long. It is getting a little boring on both Men's and Women's side. Everybody is just playing from the baseline. Trying for a more powerful shot than the last one. There is no finnesse plays of yesteryears. It is just boring tennis like US Open or French Open. It is quite disheartening. There is no need to watch all the four major tennis tournaments. They all the look the same now. There is no green court charm left at Wimbledon.

Fantastic recovery for Philippoussis after being so badly injured. It was good to see him in the fighting form. His doctor's prognosis: Not only that he won't be able to play tennis, he would have to be lucky to walk.

My vacation starts today. I'll be home for 4 days to be with Ashwini and be like ashwini. I am planning to keep up with her feeding and napping schedule. ;) Let us see how it works out.

Watched 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' yesterday. It was the first PPV movie we ordered. A big thunderstorm was causing the satellite signal to fade and was threatening us watching the movie. But, fortunately it passed by quickly and the movie went uninterrupted.

Very well made movie. The special effects and presentation kept us rivetted to the screen. But, the story was along the lines of 'Rajkumar Indrasen aani Rakshasacha Popat' or similar. But, it was fun to see basilisk as the monster. Playing Baldur's gate for hours paid off. Knew everything about basilisk before hearing it from the characters in the movie. It is a great movie for children. I am sure Ashwini will be watching it soon.... in a few years. Seems like I am always in a hurry for her to grow up. But, these are the best times, I am told. Enjoy while you find the baby where you left it few seconds ago. ;)

The line between TV and internet is getting blurrier everyday.

Dish Network has introduced interactive advertising. It is quite cool. A 'Press select for more info' button appears during the broadcasting of an ad. Upon pressing select it opens an interface similar to 'Interactive weather'. You can browse through several pages of that ad and then, return to normal programming.

A lot of advertisers seem to be buying into this idea. I am seeing more and more of these.

If you don't want telemarketers to call you, please register your home phone numbers on the 'Do not call' registry. For registering your phone number go to http://donotcall.gov or call 1-888-382-1222 unless you are a masochist and like being called or so lonely that telemarketers are the only people that call you. ;) I already did it and it takes less than 1 minute.

Hopefully, this will work and I'll be able to turn the ringer on my phone on and actually answer the phone when it rings without running to the callerID machine first.

Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?

A.Word.A.Day--fress

fress (fres) verb intr.

To eat without moderation; to pig out.

[From Yiddish fresn (to devour) or German fressen (to eat, when referring to eating by an animal).]

Now I know what the words on Zingerman's menu mean.....

An interesting article by Sandeep on Purushsukta and casteism
I know the whole hymn, but, didn't bother with the complete meaning. Should try to find a translation.

Weekend of June 21st:

  • Sujit was here for his periodic trip to make sure that Ashwini remembers him ;)

  • Mayuresh came along to meet Ashwini as a surrogate to his niece of same age that he hasn't seen yet. It doesn't matter. At this age of 3-4 months, all babies look and behave alike. He is quite funny. Full of contradictions and hypocracy: just like me and Shailen. Keeps talking all the time: just like Swapna.

  • Watched 'Bhoot'. It was OK. Short movie by Hindi standards. Less than 2 hours. The first hour was quite gripping. The second half was out of control. It was almost like the writers and director lost interest in making the movie and just dragged it to a complete anti-climax. 50% quality is better than zero like most of the other Hindi movies. No songs, No Johny Lever-type characters. Urmila looked different. Has a new hair-style. It was quite good by Hindi movie standards.

  • It was a nice visit. 2-3 days just evaporated quickly.

  • DT golf outing on Friday morning. Golfed after a long long time. My tee-shots were pathetic. Sliced badly. But, I was better with irons and putting on the greens was OK. Should go to a driving range and practice a bit.

  • It was also DT picnic day. Blew that off to go home and be with Ashwini, Sujit, and Mayuresh.

Summer of Mars

Mars is going to be closest to the earth this summer.
- That is why NASA is launching 3 spacecrafts that will go to Mars.
- That is why it will be 'the perfect target' for astronomers all through the summer.
