Some amazing numbers
Taken from the latest issue of the Time magazine:
There are 80,000 patients in mental hospitals across the US. But, in the US prisons there are 370,000 mentally ill people. That amounts to 1 in every 5 inmates. Does this mean that mental illness drives people to commit crimes?
The INS (or whatever it is called now) arrested 300 illegal workers at 61 Walmart stores across US. Some of these people were paid $2 per day for their janitorial job. That is not enough even to eat lunch. Why were they working there?
A Powerful Solar Flare
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap031029.html
Yesterday, our Sun produced one of the most powerful solar flares in recorded history. Seen across the electromagnetic spectrum, the Sun briefly became over 100 times brighter in X-rays than normal. Over the next few days, as energetic particles emitted from these regions strike the Earth, satellite communications might be affected and auroras might develop. The flare and resulting CME, emitted from giant sunspot group 10486, was captured above as it happened by the by the LASCO instrument aboard the Sun-orbiting SOHO satellite. The disk of the Sun is covered to accentuate surrounding areas. The time-lapse movie shows the tremendous explosion in frames separated in real time by about 30 minutes each. The frames appear progressively noisier as protons from the CME begin to strike the detector. The SOHO satellite has been put in a temporary safe mode to avoid damage from the solar particle storm.

Blogging could lead to unemployment
Here is a story of this guy, Michael Hanscom in his own words. He lost his job at Microsoft because of a post on his blog that talks about Apple G5s being used at Microsoft's Redmond facility and showed a photo of a truck delivering crates of G5s. He also described which building he works in and what he does. His immediate firing would make people think that Microsoft has something to hide with respect to use of G5s. But, I don't think that is the case. He was fired because he disclosed company information (location of buildings, what goes on inside, etc.), which could be considered confidential on the web without any consent from the company.
I have no doubt MS uses Apples at its facility. They have to, because they develop Office software for Apples. I am sure they use a lot of Linux there too. Not only because it is more stable and reliable ;) , but because, it is a competing product to their own. They would try and learn things from it to make next version of Windows better(Huh!!), as tough as that may sound.
When an angel turns into a monster
For the last few weeks, our little angel turns into a screaming monster in the night. We were so happy that she used to sleep through the night (9pm-6am) since she was 2 and half month old. A lot of people were very jealous of us getting normal sleep in the night. But, looks like our happy nights are over. Now, Ashwini wakes up every night, sometimes at 11pm, sometimes at 1am or 2am or 4am. We thought maybe there is something bothering her physically, because she stops crying as soon as she is picked up as if a switch is turned off. Somebody suggested it could be an ear infection. So, we went to the doctor.
In his opinion, there is nothing wrong physically with her, but, she has behavioural problems. WOW!!! at 7 and half months! What do we have to look forward to when she becomes a 13 or a 14 year old??? The doctor thinks that Ashwini has figured us out completely and has wound us tightly around her little finger. So, we need to be strict and when she cries in the night, we should pick up a pillow and put on our own head to not hear her crying. If we do that for 3-4 days or a week, she will learn to put herself back to sleep if she wakes up. It is very easy to say this than actually do it. We are trying hard, but, end up going to her eventually. Hopefully, this phase will end soon. Till then, we'll have puffy eyes with big black circles around them.
Here is one of the latest pictures of the monster (but, still adorable....)

Ads for new MS office
Did anyone see these advertisements for the new version of MS Office? They show people jumping around, climbing on tables, cutting down projection screens, etc. What the heck do they want to show? Users like the new version of Office so much that they are delirious with joy? From my own experience (or should I say frustrations) with MS Office, these users seem to have lost their minds after struggling with the new software. ;)
Wonder what is true???
Matthew Shepard was killed in a hate crime because he was gay in 1998. Now, Rev. Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, KS wants to erect a monument in a city park of Shepard's hometown of Casper, WY. This will be a 6 foot tall granite monument with a brass plaque that would say: "Matthew Shepard entered hell Oct. 12, 1998, at age 21 in defiance of God's solemn warning." Isn't this condoning the murder of Matthew Shepard? Isn't this blaming Matthew for his own murder rather than his murderers?
And, what about the sixth commandment, Rev. Phelps???? Doesn't 'Thou shalt not kill' apply here? Does being gay make Matthew not human?
Thankfully, the city of Casper is planning to oppose erection of this monument. They are ready to take care of the legal appeals that may rise from another monument currently located in the city park.
Here are some 'credentials' of Rev. Phelps from the article...
Phelps, disbarred as an attorney in 1979 for ethical problems, and his congregation, which consists largely of his relatives
...
Phelps and his extended family of 13 children have lived in Topeka since the 1950s. He opposes school integration and civil rights. Four of his offspring have left and told tales of their father's physical abuse, tax fraud and racial hatred.
...
In recent years, Phelps also has preached that God hates America, including at a memorial service in Littleton for the Columbine victims.
His research was based on interpreting six different versions of the epic, including in Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada and English, besides calculating planet and star positions and eclipses described in the epic using modern IT tools and software for astronomy...
His findings have aroused scientific interest, but sceptics have questioned his methodology.
J K Nair wrote this article on his search for the same answer earlier this year.
This is a program nobody should miss. They will talk about cutting edge research on going in the String Theory, a theory that describes everything in the universe.

The flight to India
An interesting article in the Guardian by George Monbiot about the moving of call centers from Britain to India.
Britain's industrialisation was secured by destroying the manufacturing capacity of India. In 1699, the British government banned the import of woollen cloth from Ireland, and in 1700 the import of cotton cloth (or calico) from India. Both products were forbidden because they were superior to our own. As the industrial revolution was built on the textiles industry, we could not have achieved our global economic dominance if we had let them in. Throughout the late 18th and 19th centuries, India was forced to supply raw materials to Britain's manufacturers, but forbidden to produce competing finished products. We are rich because the Indians are poor.
Now the jobs we stole 200 years ago are returning to India. Last week the Guardian revealed that the National Rail Enquiries service is likely to move to Bangalore, in south-west India. Two days later, the HSBC bank announced that it was cutting 4,000 customer service jobs in Britain and shifting them to Asia.
Thanks, Mayuresh!

Public Library of Science is open. The website has links to several journals that are freely available online and they debuted the inaugural issue of their first free journal "PLoS Biology". The mission statement on their website reads:::
The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is a non-profit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource.
The internet and electronic publishing enable the creation of public libraries of science containing the full text and data of any published research article, available free of charge to anyone, anywhere in the world.
Immediate unrestricted access to scientific ideas, methods, results, and conclusions will speed the progress of science and medicine, and will more directly bring the benefits of research to the public.
They are promoting the idea that publishing results of scientific research in the public domain is an integral part of doing research and should be included in the funding of research projects. This is a different business model compared to the current one for the journal publishing houses.
This is a revolutonary and I must say a very cool concept just like the Open Source Initiative and Free Software Foundation. I know my friends don't agree with me on Opensource and FSF, but, I sincerely believe that their rationale makes sense. When programmers can read, redistribute, and modify the source code for a piece of software, the software evolves. People improve it, people adapt it, people fix bugs. And this can happen at a speed that, if one is used to the slow pace of conventional software development, seems astonishing.
Latest addition to my bookcase arrived yesterday:
The Complete Far Side: 1980-1994 by Gary Larson

I was just amazed by its sheer size. Didn't realise it would be this big and bulky when I ordered it. It is a set of two hardbound volumes and probably weighs 20 pounds.
Gary Larson's wry humor is admired worldwide and his drawings have this surreal quality which makes them so enjoyable. In 1994, he decided never to make any more of those and has kept his word. I liked the first line of his introduction to the book.... "It has been seven years since I hung up the eraser."
I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes 'The Far Side".
Sign this petition if you support women's right to work
I am sure everyone has heard about the misogynistic utterings of Mr. Venugopal Dhoot, Managing Director of Videocon Industries. He has the right to, and is welcome hold these views as an individual, but, this assh*le is all set to enter the Rajya Sabha on a Congress ticket, surprisingly with Sonia Gandhi's support (I think she is a working woman ;) ). Please sign this petition organised by jivha. We have enough people (the likes of Laloo, Mulayam, etc.) trying to suppress Indian women in the Parliament, as witnessed by constant opposition to Women's Reservation Bill. Hopefully, this will add to the chorus of dissent that is already brewing and Mr. Dhoot's entry into Rajya Sabha will be stopped.
Here is the text of the petition:
To: Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, President, Indian National Congress
CC: Respective Editors - The Hindu, The Times of India, The Deccan Herald, The Tribune, The Indian Express, The Economic Times, Business Standard, Business Line, Outlook, India Today, Frontline, Business World
Dear Mrs. Gandhi,
We recently came across a news article in the Times of India titled "Women can't do Business: Dhoot"(September 29, 2003, URL). The article was an interview with Mr. Venugopal Dhoot, Managing Director of Videocon Industries.
We were appalled to know that one of India's leading industrialists still thinks that women belong at home, looking after the family. Mr.Dhoot's views on the "traditional" status of women in India smack of a primitive blend of thinking that almost borders not just on sexism, but active discrimination.
Mr.Dhoot says that "businesses can't be run by women, especially in India." Even though some of us believe that responding to Mr. Dhoot's observations would mean attributing some value to them, yet we cannot also let them remain unanswered.
We wonder if Mr.Dhoot has ever heard of Kiran Mazumdar Shaw of Biocon, Naina Lal Kidwai of HSBC, Anu Aga of Thermax, Shahnaz Husain of Shahnaz Herbals, Amrita Patel of NDDB, Jaswantiben Popat of Lijjat Papad, Sulajja Motwani of Kinetic, and many, many more women in various levels of business, politics, entertainment and every other conceivable sphere of life. The success of each of these women in their own, diverse spheres, in the face of cut-throat competition should serve as a gentle rejoinder for people like Mr.Dhoot.
We are of course, not forgetting the millions of nameless, faceless Indian women who excel in their own chosen areas balancing not just their own lives but that of entire families. Their achievements are no lesser in greatness compared to the women above.
The article also mentioned the fact that Mr. Dhoot was planning to enter the Rajya Sabha on a Congress ticket.
We cannot understand how the Congress Party, itself led by a woman, and with a glorious history of great women leaders like Annie Beasant, Sarojini Naidu, Vijaylakshmi Pandit and Indira Gandhi can allow a person with such antiquated opinions on the role of women in society/business to enter those most august halls of Parliament. It disturbs us when we realize that Mr. Dhoot, if he enters Parliament, will be participating in various discussions and legislations involving critical women's rights and issues when we all know what he thinks of the stature of women. A person who believes that women should only look after their homes cannot, in our opinion, be expected to speak for the rights of the millions of Indian women whom he will be representing, albeit indirectly.
We appeal to you, as Indians who truly believe in our constitution when it guarantees us equality regardless of "religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth", to reconsider the decision to grant a Rajya Sabha ticket to Mr. Venugopal Dhoot. As a woman yourself, you would understand the difficulties that women have to face in India growing up, studying, working, and even managing their families. People like Mr.Dhoot not only perpetuate inequal treatment of women, but they also advocate the same, sometimes directly as in the article, and sometimes by their thoughts and actions.
If you, the reader, the 'common man', the nameless Indian, the silent majority believe in what we are trying to bring out, then please sign this petition. It will be forwarded to the people mentioned so that they know that Indians will not put up with such blatant discrimination and stereotyping any longer. If we are to become a globally recognized and respected country, let's start somewhere closer to home.
They showed construction of the dam and how this site along with a village of 30,000 residents gradually submerged under the backwaters of the dam. It was impressive to see the water accumulate slowly over time, swell and capture houses, farms, orchards, anything that came within its reach. The program website describes other sites around the world that are threatened by submerging under the backwaters of dams. This includes the Narmada project in India and Three Gorges dam in China among others. The Sardar Sarovar and Narmada Sagar project in India has the great potential of improving life for millions, but, the sad part is that there is no proper plan for relocation of all the displaced people and historical temples and monuments that will go underwater. Hopefully, the 'Narmada Bachao Andolan' will be successful in taking all this into account.
Anyway, the main focus of the program was the artefacts rescued from the roman site. Initially, they didn't find anything but, fallen pillars, some pottary and a collection of decorative items and coins. The archeologists had almost run out of time when they found some exquisite mosaic floors from some rooms of the villa. Here is an example...

This looks like a carpet, but, it is a mosaic made up of small colored tiles. The story depicted in this scene is that of Achilles...
When Helen, the beautiful wife of Menelaus, king of Sparta, was kidnapped to Troy, Menelaus called upon his fellow chieftains to help him recover his wife. One of them was the great warrior Achilles. Achilles's mother, the immortal sea-nymph Thetis, knowing that her son's fate was to perish at Troy if he went, dispatched him to the court of King Lycomedes. There, at her urging, he disguised himself as a maiden and joined the king's daughters. Odysseus, learning that Achilles was at the palace, appeared before the women as a merchant, offering items for sale, including weaponry. While the daughters naturally gravitated towards the feminine objects, Achilles, as this mosaic depicts, couldn't resist the arms. Thereby unmasked, Achilles quickly agreed to accompany Odysseus to Troy, where Achilles was eventually killed by a poisoned arrow that struck him in the heel. It was his one weak spot: When he was a baby, his mother Thetis dipped him in the River Styx, which made him invulnerable except where she held him at the heel.
Here is a closeup of one of the faces not from this mosaic but a similar one. It is unbelievably intricate, and must have taken months to make the whole mosaic. I was truly amazed at the detail that is captured in these mosaics. Reminds me of similar mosaics that we saw in Rome.

Here is another of those excellent mosaics.

This mosaic tells the story of Daedalus and Icarus...
When King Minos of Crete decided to keep alive a magnificent bull that Poseidon had given him for sacrifice, the sea god punished him by having Minos's wife Pasiphae (seated at left in the mosaic) fall in love with the bull. To satisfy her desire, the architect Daedalus and his son Icarus (second from right and far right, respectively) built her a hollow cow in which she could hide and mate with the bull. Their coupling produced the half-man, half-bull Minotaur, which was shut away in the maze-like Labyrinth (upper right). Later, when Minos had Daedalus and Icarus shut up in the Labyrinth, they escaped using wings fixed to their bodies with wax. Daedalus safely reached Sicily, but Icarus, exulting in his new-found abilities, flew too close to the sun; the wax melted and he fell to his death in the sea.
Interestingly, according to astronomers, space is finite. This is a very comforting thought -- particularly for people who can never remember where they have left things. {Anonymous}

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that requiring the blood samples amounts to an illegal invasion of privacy because they are taken without legal suspicion that the convicts were involved in other crimes.
The San Francisco-based court, the first federal appeals court to address the federal DNA Analysis Backlog Elimination Act, said that is a violation of inmates' Fourth Amendment rights against illegal searches.
This is just so ridiculous. Why is this invasion of privacy? Why is taking blood samples for DNA is any different from taking fingerprints or mugshots of prisoners? DNA sample is just another unique identifier like fingerprints or picture of a person's face. Who are these brain-less judges? Are they proposing to destroy fingerprints and mugshots and not use them for identification purposes?
Anyway, once a person is in prison serving a sentence for a crime, shouldn't s/he lose some rights that are enjoyed by non-criminals that live outside of the prison? Their status as convicted criminals should strip them of all the rights except basic human rights. This should be a part of their punishment. Just as the convicted criminals are not allowed to vote in most of USA. There is a movement to change that law as well. The prison system in US doesn't believe in punishing criminals, they are there for making the criminals into model citizens. Hah! It is so retarded. At least the statistics on repeat offenders and career criminals should open their eyes and make prisons for punishing criminals. If there is no fear of going to prison, why would anyone stop committign crimes? But, I digress. This is a topic for whole another post.
Authorities should make every effort to find out if the inmates have committed any other crimes while they are in the prison. What is the sense in letting someone go and search for them again for some other crime?
Wonder how long it would be before they decide to say something again. The budget problems in California, that are caused by a downturn in the economy, slide in the stock market, and being screwed by bastards at Enron et al, are not solvable in the short run. Californians gave Gray Davis only 6 months in his second term before starting the signature campaign for recall. We may hear the cries of recall in another 6 months. I hope Arnold would keep his hands to himself if he doesn't want this to start even sooner.
No cake; had to celebrate with a piece of toast.

We were driving back home from a 70-mile car ride on Saturday evening. Ashwini was just cranky all the way home. Nothing comforted her. As soon as we drove into our development, she was happy and shrieking with joy. I still think it was a coincidence, but, others think that Ashwini is so perceptive, and could recognize that we were almost home.

The real temperature this morning was 28F compared to predicted low of 52F for the day.
Never rely on the weather predictions while choosing what to wear.
This is great!!! This is the second year in a row, that people who work with superconducting magnets to tweak nuclear magnetic spins, are recognized by a Nobel prize. Last year, Dr. Kurt Wuthrich jointly received the Nobel for Chemistry for his contributions to the field of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, and this year, the Nobel for Physiology goes to developers of Magnetic Resonance Imaging technology, American Paul Lauterbur and Britain's Peter Mansfield.
Long live the supercons! Three cheers to magnet people!!!
The Los Angeles Times reported that three of the women said Mr. Schwarzenegger had grabbed their breasts. Another said he reached under her skirt. A fifth said he tried to strip off her bikini in a hotel elevator. The sixth said Mr. Schwarzenegger pulled her to his lap and asked if she was experienced in a particular sexual act. The accusations covered a 25-year period, ending in 2000.

"Yes, it is true that I was on rowdy movie sets," the actor and former bodybuilder said, "and I have done things that were not right, which I thought then was playful. But now I recognize that I have offended people. And to those people that I have offended I want to say to them, I am deeply sorry about that and I apologize because this is not what I'm trying to do."
This is so fake. Does anyone think that if he wasn't running in this election, he would have come out and apologized to these women.
Oh, but, he is a movie star, so, he should be forgiven of all these acts. He can't be held accountable for such acts which would be grossly wrong if done by a common man. Given all his success in the movies, if he was an Indian movie star, there would probably be a temple honoring him and he would have become a politician long ago.
Oct. 1st is the beginning of hunting season. The first 6 weeks are reserved for Bow hunting and 15th Nov. is the first day for Gun hunting. All the auto companies in Michigan are closed on Nov.15th. for start of the hunting season. Even at my company, the parking lot is half empty on that day.
Couple of years ago, my colleague's father was bow-hunting in UP of Michigan and came across a bear. Rather than hiding, he killed it with his bow and arrow. That must have been quite scary. But, he happily brought that bear home, and they had bear meat for a few months although it was tougher and fattier than venison.
Geoff Sutton, MSN general manager for Europe, said it had become clear that unmoderated chat wasn't safe.
"The two big issues we have been dealing with have been adults 'grooming' children in chat rooms and spam getting in that is pornographic in some way," he said.
"So we have come to consider that this is not a good experience for our users and we have tried to do the right thing by showing our responsible leadership position."
These are good reasons to do this. But, the major motivation is profit. Chatrooms are a free service and this is a way to get rid of non-paying users. This is fine. It would be nice to see MSFT profit go up and increase in share price, but, they should make that clear rather than hiding behind the other reasons.
Wonder when free version of Hotmail will disappear????
It is no surprise. I knew something like this would happen when I saw the ad on ESPN about adding Rush as a football commentator. His radio program is always some offensive trashtalk in his annoying voice. Everytime I hear that voice, my automatic response is to change the station.
What he said here, not only was it wrong socially, but from a football point of view, it was a totally wrong and uninformed comment. There are so many talented black quarterbacks (now and past) in the NFL. Donovan McNabb, Steve McNair, Dante Culpepper, Aaron Brooks, Kordell Stewart. That is 5 starters in 32 NFL teams. Maybe I am missing a name or two. But, they didn't get those jobs because of any media hype. They are there because they have talent and they play well.
Anyway, what else could you expect from Rush, who over the years has become popular only by making offensive utterings???
This is great news. Platelets are normally stored at room temperature, because they are cleared out of circulation by immune cells after a freeze-thaw cycle and they have to be used within 5 days. With this new research, it will be possible to freeze and store platelets for a longer time. This will reduce loss of this precious resource and also reduce recruiting costs to bloodbanks.
In the Sept. 12 Science, Stossel and his colleagues report how chilled platelets are recognized and removed from circulation by hungry immune cells in the livers of mice. They also demonstrate how this clearance mechanism can be blocked by adding a dash of the proper sugar to the chilled platelets.
The added sugar acts like an invisibility cloak, allowing the platelets to evade detection by immune cells and circulate for the normal seven-day life span of platelets, said cardiologist Karin Hoffmeister, first author of the paper and HMS instructor in medicine at the Brigham. In mice, the sugar treatment doubled the useful storage period of platelets to 12 days.
